Annual WAFER Food Pantry Food Fair to open on Saturday

WAFER Food Pantry's Food Fair will be happening on Jan. 27 at WAFER's La Crosse location and Anytime Fitness in West Salem.

You can drive thru the La Crosse event anytime between 10 a.m. and noon without having to pre-register.

The Food Fair is open to La Crosse County residents and La Crescent residents who meet federal poverty guidelines.

Organizers also ask that you make sure your car trunk is empty and not to forget your ID.

Volunteers prepare for 100th Snowflake Ski Jump in Westby WI

There's just one more week for volunteers to prepare for the 100th Snowflake Ski Jump. The centennial competition starts on the evening of February 3rd and runs into the 4th. Crews are working to get the area set up for 3,000 people a day to watch as jumpers conquer the ski jump. One of the lead organizers, Scott Yttri, has a hand in keeping this annual tradition going since 1922. "It's our heritage. I'm the third generation working this hill, my boys are the fourth generation, so that's how this keeps going," says Yttri. "Hundreds of thousands of people have seen this and hundreds of athletes have come through and that's great to think about how many people have been down that hill."

A woman in Brazil recently welcomed an extra special bundle of joy: a 16-lb. baby boy.When it was time to give birth earlier this month to her son — and sixth child — Cleidiane Santos dos Santos said she "didn't expect this surprise."

"I thought it would be four kilos, but he came to seven kilos," the 27-year-old mother told Portuguese-language newspaper El Globo.

Baby Angerson was born via cesarean section on Jan. 18 at Hospital Padre Colombo in Parintins, weighing 7.328 kilograms (about 16.1 lbs.), per the newspaper.

The information is part of a proposed settlement agreement in a class-action case that would be limited to owners or lessees of 2018-20 Jeep Wranglers and 2020 Jeep Gladiators

A diver has been decapitated by a Great White shark in waters off of the coast of Mexico in front of shocked fishermen.

In the first deadly shark attack of 2023, Manuel Lopez was diving for molluscs off of San Jose Beach in Tobari Bay on the west coast of Mexico when he was attacked by the shark on 5 January.

Mr Lopez, a man in his 50s, had his head separated from his body by the 19-foot-long (5.7 metres) shark.

Jay Leno breaks collarbone and ribs in motorcycle crash 2 months after suffering burns in garage fire

Two months after undergoing surgery for serious burns, Jay Leno is now contending with a number of broken bones after being knocked off a motorcycle.

Wind Turbine Blade Collapses In Wisconsin

A company that operates a southern Wisconsin wind farm is investigating what caused part of a wind turbine and its blades to plummet to the ground, leaving debris strewn across a field.

No one was injured Wednesday night when the blades and top portion of a wind turbine collapsed in Dodge County, near the town of Herman.

The turbine, which is part of the Butler Ridge wind farm, stands about 400 feet above the ground, according to the National Weather Service.

Mark Dietrich, whose father owns the property where the collapse occurred, told WISN-TV that a nearby resident said that when it collapsed “they both heard it and it shook their house.”

Man Fatally Shot By Police In Wisconsin Saturday Night

Police in western Wisconsin fatally shot a man who allegedly broke into an apartment, shot a gun while threatening the homeowner and then stole the victim's vehicle.

The incident happened just before 9 p.m. in the area of Bongey Drive and Terrill Road in Menomonie, with the city's police department issuing a press release that says an "older white male" broke into an apartment and was "threatening the homeowner and shooting a firearm."

Rhode Island Girl Wants To Find Out If Santa's Really Real?

CUMBERLAND, R.I. -- A young Rhode Island girl has finally figured out how to determine if Santa Claus is real — DNA.

The Cumberland resident sent a partially eaten cookie as well as a couple of gnawed-on carrot sticks to the town's police department to ask if they can be tested for DNA, Chief Matthew Benson said in a statement Friday. I took a sample of a cookie and carrots that I left for Santa and the raindeer on Christmas Eve and I was wondering if you could take a sample of DNA and see if Santa is real?” the girl wrote. Her name and age were not disclosed.

Benson forwarded the “evidence” to the state's Department of Health-Forensic Sciences unit for analysis.

“Items to be examined for traces of DNA and compared with profiles on record for the above-named suspect/aliases,” the department form says.

The charge? Failure to finish snacks.

Results are pending.

“This young lady obviously has a keen sense for truth and the investigative process and did a tremendous job packaging her evidence for submission. We will do our very best to provide answers for her,” Benson said.RR

Local High Schooler's In West Salem Wisconsin, Volunteer At Local Food Pantry

West Salem High School students are using their language skills to help families at their local food pantry.

The Care and Share Food Pantry serves everyone who is in need, but for many, language can be a barrier.

Every Saturday, student volunteers who are taking Spanish at the high school can help serve and interpret for the families who need it.

“If there’s a stigma around food pantry, they might not actually seek help,” said junior Sydney Laursen. “Just having the means and ability, I think is a great asset in the community. ”

Volunteers encourage any Spanish-speaking family in need to come and use the pantry.

And if you are able to help, donations can be brought to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in West Salem.

Police searching for male suspect in mass shooting near Los Angeles that left 10 dead!

A gunman killed 10 people and wounded 10 others at a Los Angeles-area ballroom dance studio following a Lunar New Year celebration Saturday night, police said, setting off a manhunt for the suspect who fled the scene and remained at large as of Sunday morning.

Although the preliminary investigation indicated the suspect is a man of Asian descent, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said at a news conference that survivors gave different descriptions of the attacker during their initial interviews with authorities......
