Onalaska Fire warns of improper cigarette disposal after grass fires pop up

The Onalaska Fire Department is asking the public to be careful about discarding cigarettes and charcoal grills.

Chief Troy Gudie said Friday the department has responded to two grassfires in the last two days. He says Friday afternoon the department quickly contained a small grassfire on Highway 157 and I-90, while Thursday's fire elsewhere burned about a quarter-acre.

While no one was hurt, Gudie said these fires are a reminder for everyone that even with high water throughout the region, there is still a risk of fires developing.
