State Senator Brad Pfaff and other Wisconsin Democrats are criticizing Republican-authored bills that plan to enforce stricter unemployment benefit requirements.
The bills are a response to voters approving a non-binding referendum in April on whether able-bodied adults should look for work to receive benefits.
State law already requires that-- right now, welfare recipients have to perform four work-search activities every week.
In one of the approved bills, employers could report recipients who decline or don't show up to an interview.
Senator Brad Pfaff (D-Onalaska) said Wednesday these bills don't address real employment barriers like the high cost of childcare.
"It's difficult for people, women and families to enter the workforce when they lack reliable options for childcare," said Pfaff.
Pfaff pointed to Minnesota signing a bill for paid family and medical leave as the kind of action that would help Wisconsin's workforce problem.
Governor Evers vetoed almost identical unemployment benefit legislation during his first term.
