29-year-old Adam Fravel appeared in court via a zoom proceeding Friday morning. Fravel is charged with two counts of Murder in the Second Degree, which carry prison sentences of up to 40 years if convicted.
Fravel was arrested Wednesday after authorities discovered Madeline's body in a wooded area off Highway 43 in Mabel, Minnesota. Police filed a Statement of Probable Cause related to Fravel's arrest.
According to the statement, on the night of March 31, a friend of Madeline Kingsbury notified police that she was concerned for Madeline's health and safety. The friend said they had not heard from Madeline throughout the day which was unusual. Concerned, Madeline's friend went to her home in Winona and knocked on the door, but no one answered. Madeline's minivan was in the driveway, according to the statement.
Madeline's friend told police that Kingsbury had been having issues with Fravel.
Police attempted contact at Madeline's home, but no one responded and there did not appear to be anyone inside. Police talked to Kingsbury's family, who had not heard from her, which was uncharacteristic of Madeline, the statement said.
Police contacted Fravel, who told them he had not heard from her since the early morning and that she was supposed to pick up their children from daycare but did not. Fravel picked them up and took them to his parents' home in Mabel, he told police.
In subsequent conversations with police, Fravel admitted that their relationship was not working, and they decided to separate. The statement goes on to describe prior alleged domestic abuse incidents including one occasion where Fravel allegedly put his hands around Kingsbury's throat.
Police also asked Fravel about another incident described by a concerned party in which Fravel allegedly told her that if she did not "listen up, that she would end up like Gabby Petito." Gabby Petito's murder made national headlines; the 22-year-old died of strangulation, killed by her fiancé. Fravel told police he was trying to make a joke, according to the statement.
The statement details digital evidence collected including security camera footage that provided a more detailed look at what happened on March 31.
The video showed a vehicle matching the description of Madeline's minivan leaving her home at 9:44 a.m. heading in the direction of Mabel, Minnesota and returning to Madeline's residence in the early afternoon, 1:28 p.m.
There is a 45-minute period between the time the van is observed headed south of Rushford and later traveling northbound at the same location, the statement says.
The last portion of the statement delves into the discovery of the body on June 7. A Fillmore County deputy was searching a public gravel road a mile from Highway 43. Investigators said they learned this area was routinely maintained by members of the Fravel family and was nearby to the home of Fravel's parents. The deputy located the body in a culvert, wrapped in a fitted sheet and taped together using black Gorilla tape. Investigators later found that a roll of tape matching that description was found in the Winona residence of Kingsbury/Fravel and that one of the air mattresses at this residence was missing a fitted sheet.
The judge set a $2 million unconditional bond and a $1 million conditional bond at Fravel's court appearance Friday morning. Conditions for the latter include no drugs, alcohol or firearms and no contact with Kingsbury family members. An exception includes an existing CHIPS order allowing supervised parenting in a secure facility.
More information is expected at a 2 p.m. press conference Friday.
