Columbia County authorities identify men who drowned in Wisconsin River

POYNETTE, Wis. -- Columbia County authorities have identified two men who drowned in the Wisconsin River last week.

The men, 24-year-old Akash Selvam and 25-year-old Jerome Schreiner, were both from Madison.

Officials said the two men were playing catch on a sandbar Thursday afternoon when one of them was pulled underwater when he went to chase after their ball. The second man went under while trying to help the first resurface.

Schreiner's body was recovered several hours after he was swept away; Selvam's was recovered around 10 a.m. the next morning.

Both men worked for Promega, a Madison-based biotechnology company, and they were participating in a team outing on the river at the time.
