The Sparta community members battling cancer with some outdoor activity today.
The annual Sparta Area Cancer Support walk was today in Sparta's Memorial Park. Participants walk around the football field for as long as they wish to raise money for the Sparta Area Cancer Support. It's an organization helping 43 residents with cancer currently with medication, groceries, rent and more to help them in their fight.
"One of the unique things that we do is called kicking cancer to the curb, so people that want to support us but maybe are heading out of town this weekend, we have spots around town to where they could pull up drop the money in the bucket and they can go" said Gary Peterson, co-president of Sparta Areas Cancer Support.
Peterson mentioned that today's fundraiser is the biggest one they do throughout the year and that it's a whole community effort to make Sparta Area Cancer Support possible.
"All these kids in our community, the schools they are always fundraising for SACS, it's not just the adults, they do penny wars, special events at school and give it to SACS " Peterson said.
Officials for Sparta Area Cancer Support say it started in 2000, when founding members wanted to make sure that money raised for cancer stayed local since they never had to turn down someone who need assistance while battling cancer.
