New law allows Wisconsin drivers to add emergency contact info when creating, renewing license

MADISON, WI.....  A new law says Wisconsin drivers will be able to add emergency contact info when signing up for or renewing a driver's license.

Viroqua Republican Loren Oldenburg wrote the legislation after a talk with Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson earlier this year.

Torgerson had run a Florida license plate and saw emergency contact info pop up in his system. He told Oldenburg that information could help police reach families faster when they're responding to accidents, especially when accidents involve non-local drivers.

Under the new law, Wisconsin drivers will have the option to add emergency contact info. It's not going to be required.

The law takes effect next summer.
