Walmart employee who sleeps in car finds $4,000 in cash - but doesn't keep a cent

The $4,000 Walmart employee Brian Cassidy found on the floor of his store could have been life-changing for the then- homeless man, who was sleeping in his car at the time he stumbled across it.

But taking it wouldn't have felt right for the Bangor, Maine, resident. So, he took the envelope in which he found the cash and turned it in to a manager.

The police showed up shortly thereafter to investigate the mysterious find. Where did the cash come from? And, more importantly, who did it belong to?

Investigators eventually determined that it was dropped by Ou Chen, who had piled it together during the winter of 2014 to send to his mother in New York.

Speaking to local station WCSH , the police said Chen left work one day and compiled the cash, then went to Walmart to run a few errands before returning home. It was a snowy day in the small Maine city, and as he cleared off his car after arriving at his home, he quickly realized that the money was missing.

In a panic, Chen called the police and reported it missing, then was unable to find it when he went back to look for it. No security cameras showed the area in which he had been parked that fateful day, so the investigation stalled — until Cassidy stumbled across the money on a night shift in April 2015 as he picked up trash.

Chen was notified of the find once the investigation had concluded, and he was given his money back. The saga didn't end there, however. The Bangor Police Department recognized Cassidy for his selflessness by presenting him with a unique department challenge coin — a symbol of his honesty and integrity.

The police were even more impressed by the fact that Cassidy had turned over the money despite the dire straits he found himself in at the time. Taking to Facebook to share his good deed, the police wrote on their page, "Mr. Cassidy deserved recognition for doing the right thing when no one could see him doing it. Officer Dow presented Brian Cassidy with a Bangor Police Department Challenge coin and recognized him for being honest and having great integrity in doing his job. He went above and beyond."

It's not clear where Cassidy is today, nor whether his situation has improved. But the entire community of Bangor remembers him for his selfless deed, even in spite of his dire circumstances.
