FDA Recalls 4 Popular Sodas Due to Cancer-Causing Chemicals

The FDA has recalled several products that were sold in restaurants across the country, according to The New York Post. But the company- Charles Boggini Company- denied there was a recall.

The issue behind the recall, which the FDA listed as "voluntary," is that the chemicals used in the soda have been known to cause cancer.

What We Know

According to the FDA notice, the soda maker has voluntarily recalled the products, which are sold in one- and five-gallon containers to restaurants across the nation.

Those products include Pink Lemonade, Cola Flavoring Base, Yellow Lemonade, and Yellow Lemonade X.

According to the FDA, the products contained preservatives and food dyes, one of which can cause cancer. The company's Pink Lemonade contained FD&C Red No. 40. Red dye, which has been linked to colorectal cancer in some studies, per The Post.

The Post reported that the Cola Flavoring Base contained sulfites, which are often used as preservatives in food products. They are generally safe in smaller amounts, but in large quantities, they have been linked to skin reactions, respiratory issues, and digestive problems.

The company's Yellow Lemonade and Yellow Lemonade X were found to contain FD&C Yellow No. 5, which is an artificial food dye that can contribute to allergic reactions in those with asthma and a low tolerance to aspirin.

According to The Post, a representative for Charles Boggini Company denied there was a recall.

Per the FDA, manufacturers are required to declare when dyes are used as an ingredient in their products. This was not done, so the recall was issued.

Other Recalls Happening Now

There are many food recalls happening right now, and many of them focus on a massive salmonella outbreak. For example, cucumbers have been recalled because they have led to an outbreak. These were sold in 14 states.

Ground black pepper is also being recalled after random testing found that it was contaminated with salmonella. Additionally, the USDA has issued a warning after more than 100 people became sick from handling backyard chickens.

Salmonella has prompted a recall of several cheeses, candy-coated products, and more in recent weeks, and the investigation into the outbreak is ongoing.

Aside from bacteria, other recalls have been issued due to foreign matter being found in food products. Costco has recalled a popular cheese because it may be contaminated with plastic pieces, and Wegman's recalled pepperoni because it may contain metal fragments.
