Sheriff’s office in Wisconsin changes policy, to be more aggressive on drivers without a valid license

Don’t have a valid driver’s license? Well, authorities in one Wisconsin county announced that it will be asking the District Attorney’s Office to prosecute multiple offense crimes, in an attempt to get compliance.

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office posted on its Facebook page that it is going to be more aggressive in cracking down on drivers who do not have a valid driver’s license. The post says that officials have seen more and more drivers who continue to drive even after they have been caught.

Officials described how the system processes an Operating without a Valid Driver’s License (OWL) violation. It is mentioned that many law enforcement officers and agencies are issuing subsequent citations for Operating while Suspended, which never escalates to a crime.

As a result of this, some people continue to break the law and continue to get citations, according to the sheriff’s office. It is mentioned that these offenders seldom ever strive to get their license to drive legally and continue to not pay the citations.

Effective immediately, the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office will no longer be issuing citations for OWS in these cases, but we will be issuing the OWL citation and will be asking the District Attorney’s Office to prosecute the multiple offense crimes in hopes of gaining compliance.

Two ‘chronic offenders’ were identified by authorities for similar issues. 21-year-old Damien Hose and 20-year-old Trayvin Yarrington were both identified by authorities. Below is a breakdown of the two’s offenses:

Damien Hose

Arrested by Dodge County Sheriff’s Office for 3rd OWL (2nd within three years)

Has 14 prior OWS violations & multiple incidents of failure to pay forfeiture

Trayvin Yarrington

Issued a citation for his 3rd OWL (1st within three years)

Has 24 prior OWS violations and numerous incidents of failure to pay forfeiture.

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office will hold these individuals accountable whenever possible, and all criminal traffic will result in the driver being arrested and booked into the Dodge County Jail for processing.
